If you need just the Alice 2.4 -> 2.4.2 update, download the update file
instead of this archive.
This release of Alice includes new documentation and numerous PICTs
detailing BlueWave, .XRS, and .QWK offline FidoNet setups. This archive is
the *complete* Alice 2.4.2 release, with T2, and a separate guide on using
Charon or F1 with Alice.
Alice can function either as an offline .QWK, .XRS, or BlueWave FidoNet
mail reader, or Alice may be combined with Charon and ZipIt to form a
seamless FidoNet point setup for the Macintosh platform. Alice is shareware
- $15.

This update maker patch takes Alice v2.4.2E or v2.4.3E to v2.4.4. Bugs
fixed include correct timestamp for Zip/Arc files and BlueWave messages,
also folder specifications are now saved correctly.
Alice is an offline .QWK reader for the Mac. Alice also works as a

Subject: [*] America Online Download Manager Assistant
America Online Download Manager Assistant (AOL DM Assist) 1.0b6
people can get it a bit easier, and with less cost :). It can be found
on AOL in the Mac Utilities forum, in the Applications 2 library (new
versions will be uploaded to AOL MUT quite in advance of appearing on
the Internet, so check MUT New Files for them).>
This is AOL DM Assist, an unofficial External Tool for use with the America
Online 2.0 software for the Mac. AOL DM Assist is a utility which provides
many features lacking in the Download Manager. It does not replace DM, it
enhances it & complements it. Many of these features are ones that I hope
to see AOL add to the DM in later releases of the File Transfer Tool. Until
then, I've created this. It does not modify, in any way, the America Online
program or any of its Tools, nor does it affect the operation of the AOL
software. The only AOL-related file which this program affects is the
Mailbox files (as selected by the user).
Primarily, AOL DM Assist allows you to manipulate the files in your
Download Manager queues. You can move files up or down in the list to
change the order that they are downloaded. You can easily delete multiple
entries (DM can only delete one entry at a time--try clearing 100 entries
from your Completed Downloads queue that way ;). I also added a "Holding
Queue", so that you can hide entries from the DM to prevent them from being
transferred during a FlashSession while still retaining the file info for
later transfer. You can also reset any file to an untransferred state. Note
that all this must be done while offline and while not running the AOL
software. The AOL DM Assist package also contains ResEdit TMPL's for
editing the file queue resources.
America Online Download Manager Assistant is free (all I ask is that you
send me email with your comments--positive and/or negative--on my little
utility, or suggestions for features that you would like to see in AOL's
Download Manager), though you may send cash if you feel it has saved you
from headaches that the DM alone would have caused--I promise I won't stop
you
I am considering writing a similar "External Tool" for improving the mail
interface of AOL--better address lists, multiple "folders" for filing
incoming messages based on subject/source/etc., easier message deletion,
and so forth. This presumes that AOL does not make such improvements
themselves in the near future. If there is something that you would like to
see as far as improvements to AOL's mail or download interface, let me know
and I'll consider them.

provide access to messages coming from an InterNet mailing list, into a typical

function of Testify (another of my Tabby-compatible utilities) allows users to

look right with older versions of FirstClass.

Please note that any settings files which contain resources that also
modify the file transfer window will override the resources in the

If you use FirstClass software, why do you need this FKEY?
Each time you start a download, what do you do? Do you leave the window where
it is along with all the others, or do you move it to the bottom of the
screen so that you can see what's going on? For those of you who fall into
the second category, I made an FKEY for you that will do all the work. This
FKEY moves all transfer windows, not just the active one. This permits you to
download many things, and execute the FKEY only once.
Further instructions on use and installation are included in this BinHex'ed
CompactPro archive. The FKEY was programmed by Jean-Pierre Poulin who lives
in Quebec City in Canada. The instructions were originally written in French
by Jean-Pierre, and later translated to English by Richard N.K.

Freddie 1.2.5
Freddie lets users download their mail in a "packet" from BBS's
that offer a QWK door. Using Freddie, users can read and respond
to their mail offline at their leisure, and then send those
replies back to the BBS in another packet. Freddie offers a
variety of convenient features, such as full indexing of every
conference, sorting by four fields (including subject, which
simulates threading), searching for a string, and more. Best of
all, Freddie is a true Mac application.
Freddie 1.2.5 is an interim release that works with ZipIt under
System 7 to provide automatic decompression of QWK packets.
Freddie also allows full background operation, standardized tag-
and tearlines, auto-routing of messages on PCRelay, support for
MkQWK, default taglines, and more. Also, this version completely
System 7-savvy, even in 32-bit mode.

Hi... I am sending this archive on behalf of a friend of mine. He suggest that

------
This HyperCard 2.2 Stack should suggest how a non Pascal - C programmer may
read Hermes' files stored in the DATA folder of your Hermes Files.
For the moment, in this little example Stack you can only read (no editing
is possible) the "Transfer Sections Files". of Hermes. The long description
(the one inside the resource fork) is not read. This is not by any means the
fastest way to get the data, but nevertheless it works.
This is version 1.0.1, which supports Hermes II 3.x Directories' DATA files.

On to *my* review of the wonderful new upgrade:
Seems bugless, unlike previous versions of the external, much
faster, more efficient, and generally "worth buying." Previous versions
were plagued with mass amounts of bugs, inefficiencies, etc. This great
external is definitely worth checking out. Lots of fun with the TW-2002
theme.
Price was bumped back up to $20. Oh well. :)

Subject: Mascot 1.4 - A Utility for FC Admins
Public Release Version - Freeware
By Mike Romaniuk (romaniuk@direct.ca)
What does Mascot do?
Mascot preforms 4 different functions for First Class Administrators:
Desktop -> Batch Admin
will take a Desktop/Conference Capture and convert it to a batch admin
command to make those conferences/folders on another server (good if you
want to start gating a large number of conferences).
Desktop -> Format
will take a CORRUPTED desktop capture (ie - one with no returns in it; due
to a bug in First Class) and convert it to a normal conference campture for
use with programs such as Conference List Tool (Mascot automatically
detects & fixes corrupted captures so don't worry about converting captures
your are JUST going to use with Mascot).
Text -> Batch Admin
will take a return delimited list of conferences/folders (in a text file)
and convert it to batch admin to create those conferences on a server.
Batch Admin -> Data Base
will convert a user list to a comma delimited document, which can be
imported to most data base programs. It is in the following format:
Class, User Id, Password, First, Middle, Last, Address, Voice Number, Fax
Number ,Privilege Groups
What has happened since Vesrion 1.3?
* Complete Script Overhall (Optimized, Debugged, Etc.)
* Cleaned up the main screen & documentation
* Deleted the 150k Splash Sound - Mascot is now SMALL for those who are
hard drive space impaired.
* Updated General Information.
* Added a formatting function for fixing desktop captures without returns,
so they can be used by programs such as Conference Creator.
* Ripped out some unused functions.
* Added a better online error system.
* Fixed up the online help system.

I'm sending you the second version of MUBBS (1.1).
MUBBS is a BBS program that run on all Macintoshes from the Mac Plus
onward (although I have heard people claim that it will run on a 512K
as well). It's highly configurable with an easy-to-use graphic
interface for all computer users! However, it's not a plug-and-play
typical Mac program. For those who were frustrated with the first
version (0.5), you'll be pleased to know that this version contains a
few bug fixes, some new utilities, a text editor, and more detailed
documentation.
There is lots of support available for MUBBS, including many new
modules. Most of them are available on AOL or on the MUBBS support BBS
(The number is listed in the file). Best of all, MUBBS is FREEWARE! To
my knowledge, it is the only available free BBS program for the Mac.
Please note that I AM NOT THE AUTHOR OF MUBBS, merely the person
posting the program.
You need system 6.07 or later. While it does work under Multifinder
in the background, it is highly recommended that you have a seperate
computer for your BBS.
Enjoy!

Hello,
This folder contains a primitive security system for the MUBBS BBS system. It's merely a modified log in module that allows new users to sign up, but will time them out as soon as they reach the main menu. I am uploading this module with the permission of the MUBBS authors. I did the modification myself.
MUBBS is, to my knowledge, the only freeware BBS program available for the macintosh. Version 1.1 is available from mac.archive.umich, and the most recent version is available from the MUBBS Support BBS at (805) 259-6407. There's good support for MUBBS available, so I highly encourage anyone looking for a BBS program to check it out!.

This is an updated version of Obolus. The original Obolus 1.0, posted
here a few weeks ago, had some problems running on 68000-based Macs,
and with System 6. These problems now have been fixed.
The following is a copy of the original note accompanying Obolus 1.0,
kindly posted here by Charles Mingo:
Obolus 1.0.2 is a mail program, designed to complement the Charon
mailer program, which was posted to sumex-aim recently.
Charon is designed to work with a "reader" program (eg, CounterPoint
or Alice), to allow a Mac user to operate as a Fido "point", calling
into a Fido hub to pick up and deliver mail and news, using the
Fido file transmission protocols.
Obolus is an adjunct to Charon, which allows Charon to properly
extract the outgoing mail and news from CounterPoint, including
the ability to compress outgoing mail. Use of Obolus allows
Charon and CounterPoint to function as a fully integated "point"
package.
Both Obolus and Charon may be freely distributed and used.
Please note that any questions about Obolus should be directed to the
author's
new address at qsi@nu91.wlink.nl. The old address, qsi@contrast.wlink.nl
should
work for a few weeks yet, but it is generally slower than the new one.

old enough to crash StuffIt Lite 3.0.4. Be careful if you insist to use
such version of StuffIt to decompress and debinhex it. The following
information is extracted from its ReadMe file. Since the address is very
old, you may need to contact Aladdin System Inc. to make sure your check,

------------
QuickB DA is a desk accessory written for the CompuServe user who uploads and
downloads frequently. QuickB is a new protocol which allows for significant
speed gains and time savings when up/downloading from CompuServe. While some
telecom programs are starting to support the QuickB protocol, many others
do not. With QuickB DA, you can take advantage of this protocol from within
these telecommunications programs.

This utility is really just a quick hack I did while taking a break
from UserGrabber and CallGrabber (see below). (This Doc file took me
longer to write then the Application). This one is Freeware because
all you REALLY need to do is run it once. In the days of old before
Second Sight 3.0, Sysops didn't even have ANSI (gasp!) As a result,
Sysop's of former Freesoft BBS products may have a lot of Quotes in
their Quote files that they never bothered to colorize or "pretty up"
for their users. Personally, I must have over 300. It lets you add
ANSI to your quotes.

File follows...
---------------
QWK 1.30
This is a simple QWK-format offline mail reading package.
In order to use it, you also need a good text editor, and
a program to extract the contents of .ZIP files. I recommend
BBEdit 2.2 and UnZIP 2.0, together with a patch that's floating
around out there to add word-wrapping capability to BBEdit.
Of course, you need a terminal program too.
Instead of staying online, connected to a BBS for
many minutes, or sometimes even hours, reading th emessages, and
composing your replies to them, many BBSes now offer you
the option of downloading all your new messages as a
.QWK packet. You can then decode and read the messages offline,
compose your replies, and upload your replies in the form
of a .REP packet. Even if it takes you hours to read and
reply to all your messages, you only have to spend a
few minutes actually connected to the BBS.
This package consists of a program called QWK, which will
convert the contents of a .QWK packet into a readible text
file, which you may read with any text editor, and another
program called REP, which will take a text file created by
you, containing all of your replies and new messages,
and convert it to a .REP packet that yu may upload to
the BBS to post your messages.

Subject: QWK, a mail reader for Macintosh:comp.binaries.mac [part 1 of 2]
Date: Fri, 17 Jul 92 22:07:15 -0700 (PDT)
This is a program that a friend of mine wrote. It will allow you to
read messages produced by "QWK" compatible message archiveing doors,
typically found on PC-based BBS's. Using these doors, you can "pack"
all of your new messages into a single file, download that file, and
read it "offline" (while NOT connected to the BBS) at your convenience.
This saves in telephone charges and time on the phone, especially if you
are calling a long distance BBS.
This program is currently rather crude. It will only "de-crypt" the
messages, and place them in an ASCII text file. It is up to you to read
the messages (using a separate text editor or word processor), and it
is up to you to compose replies, by logging in to the BBS and typing
them yourself. This is explained below.
This program is being written with little or no knowledge of the format
of QWK packets and ".REP" reply packets. Therefore, any information you
can provide would be extremely helpful to the author. It will enable
him to add more features to this program, including message reading
while within the program, automatic creation of reply ".REP" packets,
etc. If you have this information, PLEASE send a message to either the
author, or me (from Internet: dburr@sbphy.physics.ucsb.edu or
DonaldBurr@aol.com; America Online: DonaldBurr)
This program has been tested on a variety of Macs, running under various
flavors of system software. It is System 7 compatible, and is 32-bit
clean. It has also been tested with various PC BBS's and QWK doors.
This file is compressed using StuffIt 1.5.1, which just about any pro-
gram out there can read.
It is shareware. The only restriction as to its distribution is that
it may not be distributed through, or by, the CompuServe Information
Service network or any of its affiliates.
The author may be reached from the Internet at "TheBob@aol.com", or
on America Online as "TheBob".

TeleFinder NetConnect TCP adds TCP/IP connectivity to TF BBS host systems.
Users, whether directly networked or calling via a SLIP/PPP account, can
connect to a TF BBS system that has installed this Control Panel over the
Internet.
Internet users see the exact same GUI or CLUI interface as do modem callers.
You can install multiple copies of the TCP extension if you wish to make
several ports available over the Internet. You can specify different port
numbers depending on the services you wish to provide - 1474 is the default
TeleFinder Port number, but you could just as easily install port 23 for
Telnet users.
This is a DEMO version of the TCP Host package. This demo is fully
functional but is set to expire at the end of September, 1994.

SLIP callers may wish to specify a smaller MTU size, as that made a
dramatic difference in my case. Your mileage will vary.

Easy to use Graphical Interface for MacOS, Win3.1/95/NT
TeleFinder/User is the application that connects your Macintosh or PC
to a TeleFinder bulletin board system (BBS via modems, ISDN or the
Intenet).
Through the TeleFinder/User-BBS interface, you'll find business
services, customer support, as well as friendly chat. A BBS can also serve
as a conference forum, provide electronic mail service, and store files to
be transferred.
Each individual or company operating the BBS (the sysop) determines
which services to offer its callers. The Sysop also decides whether the BBS
will be open to public use, or kept for private use.
TeleFinder provides an easy to use interface to work with files, mail
and messages by simply clicking and dragging icons.
TeleFinder also includes a text editor, address book, and a mail
outbox for automating the pickup and delivery of mail. The client software
is freely distributable. This software may be included on CD-ROM archives.
Requires MacOS 7.0 or higher, 68030, 040, or PowerPC processor.

Subject: FC Text-Picture 1.1.3
FC Text-Picture version 1.1.3 exists to quickly convert pictures and icons
into stylized text. This text format is suited perfectly for e-mail within
some kinds of online programs (First Class, eWorld, AOL, ect.)
Updated stuff since 1.1.2:
* Made the open dialog look normal and removed the strange dialog and menu
colors.
* Updated the documentation to give my new e-mail addresses, among other things.
* I'm also using this space to announce that FC Text-Picture's source code
is freely available to anyone who asks me for it. It is written in THINK
Pascal 4.0 and very under commented, but still good for anyone who wants to
do something with it. I just don't have the time anymore to let FC
Text-Picture live on to do cooler things.

Subject: TIMM 1.4 - The Ideal Mac Mailreader
TIMM 1.4 is a fast and easy to use Macintosh offline mail reader for the
QWK mail format found on many Bulletin Boards.
An off-line mail reader lets you read and respond to messages in packages
that you have downloaded from a BBS, at your convenience. This way, you can
enjoy "BBSing" without tying up your telephone line, running up excessive
long-distance charges, or worrying about running out of time on your
favorite BBS.
TIMM includes full searching and filtering facilities, has a full featured
tagline manager and an address book which support groups and multiple
recipients. Filtering lets you eliminate mail from annoying people, and
with the searching functions you can search in the mail based on message
text, sender, subject etc. TIMM automatically handles long Internet
addresses and subjects, and can open multiple QWk packets simultaneously.
This releases corrects bugs related to replying to messages and deleting
taglines.
